Scrapping of geoblocking will open up e-commerce for Estonians

Estonia's Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kristen Michal supports the proposal of the Commissioner responsible for the EU digital single market, Andrus Ansip, to do away with geoblocking in the union, since it would ensure access for Estonians to e-commerce all over the European Union, informs LETA/BNS.

"In subsequent discussions of the initiative the Commission can count on our strong support. Without the digital single market all European countries will lose out in competitiveness," Michal said in a press release.

"When the plan is implemented, Estonians will be able to buy goods and services in the online stores and on the e-commerce platforms of all EU member states. Today this is not possible – that's why the initiative of Ansip is important," Michal said.

Michal on Thursday invited to breakfast ministers from 14 countries and Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip to discuss how to move forward quickly with developing the EU digital single market.

The countries whose representatives took part in the breakfast are Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well as the next EU president, Slovakia. Estonia organized the meeting in conjunction with the ALDE party.

The European Commission on Wednesday tabled a package of measures to boost e-commerce by tackling geoblocking, making cross-border parcel delivery more affordable and efficient and promoting customer trust through better protection and enforcement.

The e-commerce package is composed of three legislative proposals, the first of which addresses unjustified geoblocking and other forms of discrimination on the grounds of nationality, residence or establishment. The second is a legislative proposal on cross-border parcel delivery services to increase the transparency of prices and improve regulatory oversight, while the third legislative proposal is about strengthening the enforcement of consumers' rights and guidance.
