A new name of skilandis, a smoked meat product, has been included in the European Union's Register of Traditional Specialties – it will be called the Lithuanian Skilandis from now on, informs LETA/BNS.

"Skilandis needs no introduction in Europe, the product is valued and known in many countries, and from now on everyone will know its country of production," Lithuania's Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitiene said in a press release.

The ministry had asked the European Commission to change the product name with reservation of the name.

A few years ago, skilandis was the first product from Lithuania and the rest of the Baltic states to be included in the EU register of protected designations of origin (PDO).

Other Lithuanian products on the register include traditional curd cheese Lietuviskas Varskes Suris, Daujienu Namine Duona, a homemade brown rye bread, Seinu/Lazdiju Krasto Medus, a local variety of honey, Zemaitiskas Kastinys, a traditional sour cream product and the Stakliskes mead.
