EUR 336 mln worth of medicines sold in Latvia in 2015

In 2015, drug sales in Latvia reached EUR 336 million as compared to EUR 319 million in 2014, LETA was told at the State Agency of Medicines.

The aforementioned turnover was made up of EUR 332 million worth of registered medicines and EUR 4 million worth of unregistered drugs sold in Latvia in 2015.

 

Sales of Latvian-made medicines rose by about EUR 4 million from 2011, to EUR 16 million in 2015, making up 4.7% of the total amount of medicines sold in Latvia in 2015.

 

Preparations containing meldonium were the best-selling Latvian-made drugs by euro-denominated sales, while Latvian-made preparations containing paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine were the best-selling drugs by the number of packages sold over the year.

 

Like a year before, preparations meant for treating cardiovascular conditions were the most widely consumed drugs last year (33%), followed by medicines for treating digestive and metabolic disorders (24%), drugs for treating neurological disorders (10%), drugs for blood disorders (10%) and medicines for treating conditions of other types.

 

Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and ibuprofen were the most popular over-the-counter medicines in Latvia in 2015.

 

The average price of a package of Latvian-registered medicines last year rose 3% year-on-year to slightly more than EUR 7, while the average price of a package of unregistered medicines increased 18% to EUR 17.
