During the first quarter of 2016 cargo handling at the southwestern Latvian port of Liepaja picked up 5.8% year-on-year to 1,444,553 tons, according to the data provided by the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The port’s administrator Guntars Krievins told LETA that the cargo flow at the port is stable with a positive trend, but the port and stevedores have to work on attracting more cargoes.

Bulk cargoes made up 1.013 million tons of the cargoes reloaded in Liepaja in January-March 2016, up 8% from the same period in 2015. These cargoes included 760,500 tons of grain, up 7.8% from the same month a year ago, and 114,800 tons of construction materials, which was 7% less than a year ago.

The port’s representatives noted that the port had attracted not only grain, but also other kinds of agricultural cargoes, such as soya and sunflower products.

Also, in March Liepaja port imported 21,000 tons of mineral fertilizers to Chad in Africa.

Reloading of general cargoes was down 7.9% year-on-year to 330,000 tons, while the amount of liquid cargoes reloaded in the three months of 2016 grew 47.2 to 101,400 tons.

Liepaja SEZ reported that among general cargoes, the ro-ro cargo flow was quite stable, reaching 147,200 tons, which is 10% of the port's total turnover and 44.6% of the turnover of general cargoes.

In March 2016, cargo turnover grew 5% year-on-year to 447,400 tons in Liepaja. The cargoes reloaded in March included 301,100 tons of bulk cargo, 111,200 tons of general cargo and 35,100 tons of liquid cargo.

The number of ships served at Liepaja port dropped by two from the same period a year ago to 344 ships in January-March 2016.

The number of ship passengers was down 6.3% to 7,609.
