PrintFinalists of the Human Development Award of Latvia 2016 announced

On March 15th, the Jury of the Human Development Award announced the finalists of the Human Development Award of Latvia 2016. The purpose of the award is to promote human development, prosperity, and the well-being of Latvia’s people.

Overall 63 nominations, an all-time highest number, were received from across Latvia. The following finalists in four categories were selected:

 

1.      Social Responsibility Award:

a) Agita Hauka, Chairperson of the Board of the Latvian Farmers Federation,

b) SIA Microtīkls,

c) Zigmunds Zaļenko, Handyman of Brocēni Pre-school educational institution „Mūsmājas” and Youth Center „Kopā”.

 

2.      Outstanding Commitment to Education Award:

a)      Accenture Latvia;

b)      Egils Blūms, Founder and Director of the Alternative School of Jurmala.

 

3.      Exemplary Contribution to Health and Well-Being Award:

a)      Children's Palliative Care Society,

b)      Society “AGIHAS”,

c)      Latvian Cancer Patient Support Society “Dzīvības koks”;

d)     Dr. Jāzeps Pogumirskis.

 

4.      The Future of Latvia Award:

a)      Andris Berzins, Co-founder of TechHub Riga;

b)      Association “Karosta Kids”;

c)      Association “Trīs reiz trīs”.

 

Nominees’ accomplishments were evaluated by the jury of recognized experts, representing both partner organizations and representatives from Latvian society on the following criteria:

 

·      Impact: Demonstrable impact on society.

·      Sustainability: Sustainable development.

·      Innovation: Innovative, creative and original approaches, successfully adapted to local conditions.

·      Inspiration – Actions serving as a model of practice for others.


Latvian citizens, companies and organizations registered in Latvia were eligible to be nominated for the award.

 

The winners in each category will be announced at the Award Ceremony and Dinner on April 15 at 7:00 pm at the National Library of Latvia.  The winners will receive a sculpture “Sprout” made by the artist Olga Silova, a certificate of recognition and other special prizes by the program sponsors.

 

 

Patron of the Human Development Award, President of Latvia, HE Raimonds Vējonis said: “The Human Development Award covers many relevant long-term development areas for Latvia, while each nomination highlights significant work to the benefit of community by a person, company, or organization.”

 

The Human Development Award is sponsored by Hamid Ladjevardi and family, Abbvie, Bikkel Group and Klavins Ellex. It is supported by media partners IR, Latvijas Radio, Leta and LSM.lv.

 

The American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia (AmCham), the U.S. Embassy in Latvia and the Civic Alliance of Latvia hold the Human Development Award for the 3rd consecutive year to honor inspirational people, businesses and organizations.

 

The Human Development Award was established in 2014 in order to promote human development[1] and to honor inspirational people and organizations in Latvia who have significantly contributed to human development. The award aims at promoting initiatives reducing inequality, fostering social responsibility and promoting education, health and well-being of the Latvian people.
