Lithuania's seed market grows to EUR 73.6 mln in 2015

Lithuania's seed market in 2015 grew by 2.6% to reach 73.6 million euros, the business daily Verslo Zinios reported on Wednesday, cites LETA/BNS.

"(Certified seeds') market share has been around 15% recently. Although there is a growing understanding that certified seeds ensure better harvests, the share increases significantly only when poor weather conditions hit winter wheat crops and there is a rush to buy seeds sold by companies," Arnoldas Cepele, product development director at the agricultural company Syngenta, told the paper.

"Since the share of these seeds is relatively small, there is considerable competition in the market," he added.

The use of certified seeds in Lithuania has increased by around 70% over the past five years. Such seeds currently account for less than one-seventh of all seeds used in the country.
