Winners of six Lithuanian Science Prizes were announced in Vilnius on February 8th, 2016, informs LETA/BNS.

Among the recipients are scientists Gytis Juska, Kestutis Arlauskas and Kristijonas Genevicius for a cycle of work on materials, Eugenijus Norkus on work in the field of chemistry, Virgilijus Ulozas for a cycle of work on treatment of larynx diseases.

Other recipients include Julius Zilinskas on optimization algorithms, Vytautas Levandauskas for work on masonry and Arturas Tereskinas for a cycle of research on cultural sociology and cultural studies.

Just like last year, merely six prizes will be awarded this year.

"There are two criteria for granting the prize. The first and foremost – the work has to be of high scientific standard," Juras Banys, the chairman of the award commission, told BNS Lithuania on Monday in comment of the commission's decision to grant six instead of the possible seven prizes.

Merely one of two possible prizes will this year be awarded for research in the field of biomedicine and agriculture.

The prize amounts to about 29,600 euros.

According to the governmental resolution, the Lithuanian Science Prize is awarded for significant fundamental or applied research and experimental (social and cultural) development.

Nominees for the prize may be published in Lithuania or abroad, given that they are important for Lithuania's history, culture and economy.
