Estonian writer Jaan Kaplinski wins European Prize for Literature 2016

Estonian writer Jaan Kaplinski has been awarded the prestigious European Prize for Literature, news portal of the public broadcaster ERR reports, cites LETA/BNS.

The award is presented to an author for their entire body of work, which best represents the cultural dimensions of Europe.

 

"I know it already since the Christmas of 2013," Kaplinski told the Aktuaalne Kaamera newscast. He added that he was told to keep it a secret and only a few of his family members knew about that.

 

Other authors who have received the award are Jon Fosse, Erri de Luca, Vladimir Makanin, Drago Jancar, Tony Harrison, Kiki Dimoula, Tankred Dorst, Tadeusz Rozewicz, Bo Carpelan and Antonio Gamoneda.
