Latvian mobile telecommunications operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), by investing in the development of its mobile network and participating in international conferences and working groups on the new 5G standard network, has begun work so that Latvia could become one of the first countries in the world where 5G mobile communications networks will become available, the board chairman of LMT Juris Binde said during the annual conference of the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association, cites LETA.

As Binde explained, LMT is in close cooperation with the supplier of the LMT network infrastructure Nokia, which is currently developing and researching the 5G network. ''Even though the introduction of the 5G network is several years away, LMT has developed an innovative 4G investment model, which could become an example to other operators around the world, thus Latvia's experience is interesting also on the international level,'' Binde explained.

''LMT is the first network from where a call was made from a mobile phone in Latvia, we were the first to introduce the GSM network, and as the sector's leader we were also the first to offer 3G and 4G mobile communications possibilities,'' Binde continued.

''Now, we are working on the creation of the 5G network, and are committed to be amongst the world leaders in introducing this network,'' he said.
