Oil products, fertilizers drive Klaipeda port to record highs in 2015
Arvydas Vaitkus said that a drop in cargo volumes in October was due to technical reasons, but declined to elaborate.
"Oil products and natural chemical fertilizers continue to drive our port to record highs this year. We are also pleased at the Butinge (crude oil) terminal's results," he said at a news conference.
The port handled a total of 32.296 million tons of cargo in January through October, a rise of 7.3% year-on-year. In October alone, however, cargo traffic fell by an annual 7.4% to 3.38 million tons, the port authority said.
Vaitkus would no disclose the reasons behind the decline.
"The reasons are outside the port of Klaipeda and outside Lithuania. I wouldn’t like to speak about them. They are more of a technological nature. It's not geopolitics," the CEO said.
"They are known to us and I think that everything will be sorted out quickly and we'll be able to continue to handle transit cargo," he said.
Annual cargo traffic at the port is expected to reach 38.5 million tons this year.
