This year the season began in early May. 51 ships sailed to Klaipeda between May-October and brought a record number of passengers – 60,202.
According to representatives of the Port of Klaipeda, this is the first time that so many tourists have visited. Most of them chose tours of Klaipeda and surrounding towns. In 2014, as much as 63 cruise ships brought 57,797 tourists to Klaipeda.
The Curonian Spit remains the biggest attraction to passengers of cruise ships. The Cold War museum near Plateliai, in Zemaitijos National Park, attracts the interest of both the Americans and Germans, yet it is not too popular because it is far away and the journey is long. Tourists are also interested in the tour to Lapiu village. Palanga and Ventes ragas remain popular as well. In addition, tourists are offered to go fishing or take a ride on hot air balloons or paragliders, yet the latter entertainment is sometimes refused due to the prices or out of fear for safety etc. Because cruise ships often arrive in Klaipeda in the early morning and dock only for several hours to leave around the evening, there is little time for tourist attractions.
