Modernisation of copper cable network is performed in Latvia, including outside the city centres and it is especially significant for households without accessibility to optical Internet. Copper cable networks modernised technologically or “Internets 5” is the new generation Internet that provides Internet with speed up to 60 Mbit/s in the existing infrastructure.

“In the latest index of the most innovative countries in the world, summarised by one of the globally leading business graduate school INSEAD, Latvia has demonstrated a significant growth exactly in the part of infrastructure. Compared with the last year, we have climbed 15 places in this index, mainly thanks to improved information and communication technology availability, general infrastructure logistics, e-involvement and state e-service indices. I believe that the large copper cable network modernisation work carried out along with appropriate support from the public institutions, initiative and creativity of inhabitants will allow us to provide higher life quality both on the individual and business level,” said the Chairman of the Board of Lattelecom Juris Gulbis.

Copper cable network improvement works continue to ensure that until the end of the year, the modernised network would be available to at least 180,000 households. Network construction work has been completed in Cēsis, Ikšķile, Jūrmala, Kuldīga, LIepāja, Madona, Mazsalaca, Mērsrags, Rīga, Sigulda, Skrīveri, Skrunda, Smiltene, Talsi and other cities and in rural areas. Faster Internet allows sharing of large files easier, watch interactive TV on several screens simultaneously and use its large functionality – records of broadcasts, archive, video lease etc.

Internet network modernisation will continue until the end of the year to ensure that faster Internet is accessible to 180,000 Lattelecom customers in cities and rural areas. It should be noted that in 2014 Latvia achieved the joint European goal to ensure that half of inhabitants of a country are provided access to Internet with speed at least 100 Mbit/s until 2020.
