Riga has the densest network of Wi-Fi hotspots compared to other capital cities of the European Union countries, shows a research by the telecommunications company Lattelecom, cites LETA.

The research was done by calculating the number of Wi-Fi hotspots per population of a given city, and it showed that in Riga 444 people share one Wi-Fi hotspot, in Tallinn – 975, in Valletta – 1,074, in Lisbon – 1,090, and in Vilnius – 2,162.

According to Lattelecom CEO Juris Gulbis: "By developing free Wi-Fi access points and providing free service we have become an example to all other European Union countries – this is also proved by the high interest from the international media. For example, Vienna plans to open 400 free Wi-Fi hotspots in 2016 – quite a lot more Internet hotspots have been available for the residents of Riga and Latvia for three years already," says Gulbis. "That is why appreciation by people is very important, and Lattelecom polls show that more than half of Latvian Internet users claim that Latvian public Wi-Fi hotspots are better than those abroad in terms of availability, quality, and ease of use."

The research was conducted in the August 2015, based on information available on the Internet regarding free Wi-Fi access points in the European Union capital cities and comparing the data to Lattelecom hotspots.

As reported, the telecommunications company Lattelecom offers more than 4,500 free Wi-Fi hotspots in all of Latvia, including 1,000 access points in Riga. Wi-Fi is available in 21 hospitals, 165 hotspots are available in schools, as well as in parks, city squares, and other public places.

In May, one-millionth user connected to the network.
