Estonian state invests 40 mln euros to foster digital teaching in schools

The Estonian state will invest over 40 million euros to make sure that by the year 2020, it would be possible, if desired, to carry out all the teaching in schools digitally, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The investment will be made into Estonian language e-study resources, and into the gradual transfer to entirely paperless e-exams, announced spokesman of the Ministry of Education and Science.

 

Education Minister Jürgen Ligi pointed out that already now, almost every young person has a smart device in their pocket. "It is important to put them to work for the sake of education. Until now, schools have developed mainly digital infrastructure, now we want to focus on digital devices having also high-quality Estonian-language content," said Minister Ligi.

 

In addition to developing new and adjusting existing e-study materials, teachers will be offered additional training to support them in using the study materials. Also gradually e-examinations are being introduced.

 

The activities carry out the Estonian Lifelong Learning Strategy 2020 digital revolution programme. The aim of the program is informed and smart integration of digital possibilities in the learning process. Partners are the Foundation Innove, Educational Technology Foundation and the University of Tartu.

 

The total funding is 40.35 million euros, of which 34,297,500 euros comes from the European Social Fund and 6,052,500 euros is national co-financing.
