In 2014, inbound overnight trips grew by 2.5% in Lithuania

In 2014, compared with 2013, the number of inbound tourists arriving for overnight trips grew by 2.5%, from 2 to 2.1 million. Meanwhile, the number of inbound tourists arriving for same-day trips fell by 3%, from 3.3 to 3.2 million, writes LETA/ELTA.

According to Statistics Lithuania, inbound personal trips with at least one night spent accounted for 70.4%, whereas business trips – for 29.6% of all trips. In 2014 compared with 2013, the number of personal trips increased by 1.2%, whereas the number business trips increased by 5.8%. 59.6% of inbound tourists were male. 44% of tourists learned about Lithuania from friends or relatives. Every second tourist visited Lithuania for the first time.

 

58% of inbound tourists arrived by road transport, 36% – by air, 5% – by rail and 1% – by sea transport.

 

In 2014, most inbound tourists arriving for an overnight trip were from Belarus (424,800 or 21%), Russia (326,300 or 16%), Latvia (228,500 or 11%), Germany (174,200 or 8%) and Poland (162,000 or 8%).

 

In 2014 compared with 2013, the number of tourists from Latvia and Estonia increased by 15 and 7.2% respectively. The number of tourists from European Union member states increased by 2.7%, from 1.009 million to 1.037 million. The number of tourists from other countries increased by 2.3%, from 1.002 million to 1.026 million. In 2014, tourists from the EU constituted 50.3% of all inbound tourists.

 

In 2014, equally as in 2013, one inbound tourist spent on average 4.4 nights in Lithuania. The number of trips with 1-3 nights spent increased by 1.2% and constituted 70.7% of all overnight trips. The number of trips with at least 4 nights spent increased by 5.8%. The total number of nights spent was 9.1 million in 2014, or by 1.4% more than in 2013.

 

In 2014 one inbound tourist arriving for overnight trip spent on average EUR 372.8, this is by 1.1% more than in 2013. Tourists from Japan, Israel and the United States spent the most – on average EUR 570 during their average 6 nights in Lithuania. Latvians and Poles spent on average EUR 250 during their average 4 nights in Lithuania. In 2014, inbound tourists with at least one overnight stay spent EUR 768.9 million, or by 3.6% more compared with 2013.

 

70% of tourists visited Vilnius, 28% – Kaunas, 24% – Klaipeda, 17% – Trakai, 14% – Palanga.

 

34% of inbound tourists arriving for same-day trips were arriving to shop, 24% – on business. Inbound same-day tourists spent EUR 291.4 million, this is by 0.6% more compared with 2013. Expenditure on purchases accounted for 51% of their total expenditure. One same-day tourist on average spent EUR 92.

 

 

In 2014, most same-day tourists arrived from Latvia (1.059 million or 33.6%), Belarus (606,100 or 19.2%), Russia (526,200 or 16.7%), Poland (509,300 or 16.1%) and Estonia (237,900 or 7.5%).
