In Seoul, State Secretary announced the opening of the Latvian Embassy in Korea

On 20 April 2015 in Seoul, at political consultations between Latvia and the Republic of Korea, State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics presented a note to the Korean side in which Latvia conveyed its official notification of the opening of the Latvian diplomatic mission in Seoul, reports BC the Latvian MFA.

First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea, Cho Tae-yong, who chaired the consultations for Korea, congratulated Latvia on this decision and pledged support from the Korean side for opening of the Embassy.

 

During the consultations, exchanges of bilateral visits were discussed including the visit by the Latvian Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Saeima, the Speaker of the Korean Parliament, and the visit to Latvia by the head of the Latvian-Korean Parliamentary Friendship Group in 2015. The Korean side informed the State Secretary that, at the Riga meetings of ASEM (Asia – Europe Meeting) Ministers for Education and Transport in the final week of April, Korea will be represented by the Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Education, and the Minister of Transport and their delegations.

 

The conversation also addressed questions such as promotion of economic and business relations, exchanging votes at international organisations, and current issues of international security. During the meeting, support was requested concerning Latvia’s candidature in the 2025 elections for a seat at the UN Security Council. The Latvian side invited Korea to hold negotiations in Riga on the Air Traffic Agreement in order to facilitate cooperation in the aviation sector. And tourism was highlighted as a prospective area of economic cooperation.

 

Andrejs Pildegovics will be visiting Seoul till 21 April. His visit includes meetings with the leaders of the Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA), the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), and the Chair of the Latvia-Korea Parliamentary Friendship Group, Byun Jae Ill. The State Secretary will also moderate a round table discussion and deliver a lecture at the faculty of international studies at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
