Taking demand into account, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has made a strategic decision to resume direct flights between Riga and Stockholm as of the summer 2015, SAS spokeswoman Ruta Juciene told LETA.

She said that customer interest in the SAS route between Stockholm and Riga became noticeable even before the first flight took off, and is expected to grow further, as daily flights to Stockholm Arlanda Airport will provide SAS passengers with convenient connections to numerous destinations not only in Europe but also in the United States and Asia.

SAS also indicates that since 2008, when the company terminated direct flight services in Riga, business development between Sweden and Latvia has demonstrated a positive shift and led to the growth in business travel needs between the two capitals.

CEO of the Riga International Airport, Andris Liepins, says that the return of SAS will provide "greater travel opportunities for passengers from Riga airport, and in the meantime will offer a wider selection of available airlines".

SAS was founded in 1946. Being a member of "Star Alliance", together with 27 partners, SAS offers 1,300 destinations worldwide in 193 countries.

As reported, SAS commenced flights from Stockholm to the Riga International Airport on March 29, performing 18 flights a week.

According to the airline's spokeswoman, the first SAS flight took off from Riga airport back in 1990, while in 2008 the company terminated direct flight services due to unfavorable economic conditions.
