Planes to fly route-free in Estonian air space in autumn

BC, Tallinn, 25.03.2015.Print version
Starting 12 November 2015, planes flying in the Estonian airspace can abandon the existing fixed corridors, and begin to fly faster and more economically, LETA/Eesti Ekspress reports.

The new air route management concept will come in force at the same time in five more countries – Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Estonian Air Navigation Services Air Traffic Control Department Head Üllar Salumäe said that the possibility to choose the most direct route should help airlines to save time and money. The estimated daily gain in time is for the planes using the six national airspaces a total of 22.4 hours, they will not fly 15,454 kilometres unnecessarily. The plan is to save a total of 50,069 kg of fuel per day, which in turn should lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 166,897 kilograms.

The project is not completely innovative – already now, airplanes fly, if they desire, route-free for example in the air space of Ireland and Portugal.
