Export of Lithuanian dairy products to foreign countries grew to EUR 615.73 mln in 2014
What is more, the total export of Lithuanian dairy products to foreign countries grew from EUR 581.85 million in 2013 to EUR 615.73 million in 2014.
Nevertheless, Egidijus Simonis, Director of Lithuanian dairy association Pieno Centras, explains that the Russian market was far more lucrative for processors, thus why milk purchase prices dropped drastically.
Dairy producers have been told that milk purchase prices will not decrease in March 2015. However, compared with the beginning of last year, this year they have already dropped by nearly twice – the most in Europe.
Raw milk is being purchased in Lithuania the cheapest in Europe, while its cost in shops is higher than in some EU countries. On its way from a farmer to a shop the price of milk increases by at least 5 times. In February, milk purchase price in Lithuania was at around EUR 0.18-0.19, nearly twice below the EU average of EUR 0.32.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Bronius Markauskas hopes that milk purchase prices will not fall in March. According to him, milk processors will be the ones to benefit the most from this milk crisis.
