The joint-stock dairy companies Rigas piena kombinats (RPK) and Valmieras piens, which both are part of Food Union Group, have received China's HACCP food safety certificates authorizing them to begin exports to China as soon as the relevant permission is received from the Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia and the Chinese authorities, cites LETA.

According to Food Union, agreements with prospective business partners in China are already in place.

"The moment we send our first shipment of ice cream to China is very near. We are waiting impatiently on both countries' food safety services to settle the last formalities," said the company's CEO Normunds Stanevics.

Stanevics went on to say that launching export to China meant that Food Union would have to buy more milk from farmers.

"According to our estimates, at the early stages we will need an additional 50 tons of fresh milk a day – and up to 400 tons a day in one year since we commence exports to China. This is twice as much as we buy currently," said Stanevics.

The Chinese HACCP food safety certificates enable the two Food Union plants to export ice cream, pasteurized milk, cream, cheese spreads, butter, curd, skimmed milk and other products to China. During the early stages, the emphasis will be on export of ice cream "Ekselence", "Pols" and "Nu Fruit", as well as "Rasa" fresh cheese and cheese spread.

As reported, Chinese food safety experts were visiting Food Union plants for five days this past January.
