Joint-stock metallurgical company KVV Liepajas metalurgs has not yet fully resumed operations, however, the company already employs 550 workers, Liepaja Mayor Uldis Sesks (Liepaja Party) said in an interview with the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama" today, reports LETA.

Sesks said that a factory so large must perform all its tasks step by step, as there are a lot of mechanisms that require some repairs before put into operation.

He stressed that this is a very important moment not only for Liepaja, but for the entire Latvia as well.

The head of the State Employment Agency Liepaja branch, Dace Baumane said in an interview with LTV channel that about 415 of the 1,300 former Liepajas metalurgs employees are currently without a job. A number of them will resume working at the former company, while others have found a job elsewhere and are not planning to return to Liepajas metalurgs.

Baumane said that, in theory, everyone who was laid off had the opportunity to find a new job.

The unemployment level in Liepaja currently stands at 12.9%.

As reported, KVV Liepajas metalurgs began operating its rolling mill in test mode last week, the company's board member Igors Kovalenko informed LETA.

Rolling mill specialists and technologists are still being hired, thus, the mill will provide a work place for a total of 551 employees.
