Development of ICT sector set as a priority in Ventspils

At the end of 2014, Ventspils City Council accepted the Ventspils information and communication technology (ICT) sector development strategy and action plan for 2014 – 2020. Various ICT sector stakeholders – Latvian higher education institutions, municipal and ICT support organisations of Ventspils, as well as more than twenty local and international ICT companies, incl. TestDevLab, DPA, Microsoft, IBM and others were involved in the Strategy development, reports Ventspils High Technology Park.

The development of the ICT sector has been set as one of the priorities of the Ventspils City Council, projecting notable events for more rapid growth of the ICT sector, which will promote economic activity as well as promote the entrepreneurial environment in the city itself.

 

The overarching objective of the ICT strategy, determines to create the Ventspils city as a smart technology development and manufacturing centre by increasing the turnover of the ICT sector to 92 million Euros, number of employees in the ICT sector to 1.150 and number of the ICT students to 786 by year 2020.

 

"Over the last 7 years Ventspils city experienced a rapid ICT sector development. The number of ICT enterprises has increased more than 5 times. The new strategy and action plan will help to continue this development and achieve even more substantial concentration of ICT businesses in the city. According to the strategy we plan to make Ventspils more visible on the European ICT map, by finding a niche suitable for the city and the region, as well as by providing high quality education, outstanding infrastructure, and the best business environment for ICT enterprises,” says Ivars Eglājs Chairman of the Board, Ventspils High Technology.
