Tele2 opens fibre-optic connection with Frankfurt

Tele2 opened on Wednesday a 3,000-kilometre long high-speed fibre-optic data communication channel between Tallinn and Frankfurt, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Tele2 said that the first encrypted direct connection from Estonia to Central Europe enables to transmit data volumes up to 9.6 terabit per second. The hubs of the network, built on high voltage power lines and gas pipelines, are located in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Berlin and Frankfurt.

 

Tele2 Group Vice President Niklas Sonkin said that development and further coordinating of the data connecton route is managed by Tele2 Estonian subsidiary.

 

Tele2 Eesti Managing Director Argo Virkebau said that currently connections of the data highway are being built to Helsinki, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. The total length of the route is 4,500 kilometres when completed.
