BC, Vilnius, 20.10.2014.Print version
The Food Bank (Maisto Bankas) campaign in Lithuania which took place on Friday and Saturday saw record high contributions, the organisers say.

Based on preliminary data, shoppers across Lithuania donated food worth more than LTL 1.23 million (EUR 357 thousand). It is by around 20% more than what was donated in spring, informs LETA/ELTA.

Head of the Food Bank charity and support foundation Vaidotas Ilgius says that the results were affected by the growing generosity, solidarity and empathy in Lithuania. According to Ilgius, the president and other well-known personalities also inspired people to contribute more. Retail networks encouraged to participate in the charity campaign as well by applying discounts to certain products.

Approximately 140,000 people took part in the autumn Food Bank campaign that was held in 73 cities and towns and donated more than 380,000 products with long shelf-life. Some 7,690 volunteers helped to collect the needed food products in Iki, Maxima and Rimi supermarkets.
