For the ninth time in a row, the annual "Riga Conference 2014", Northern Europe's leading foreign and security policy forum, is held in Riga today and tomorrow, September 13. The conference is taking place at the Latvian National Library, gathering high-level security and foreign affairs experts, diplomats, politicians, academicians, and business owners.

The conference's spokeswoman Jevgenija Petjukevica informed LETA that the conference will focus on matters concerning security and foreign affairs that will be discussed extensively. The discussions will involve opinions of various experts, as well as proposals about the current developments in the world. Speakers at the conference will discuss the consequences of Ukraine and Russia's military conflict, the potential challenges in establishing a single energy market in Europe, as well as the increasing influence of populism, nationalism, and extremism on Europe's common policy.

"The conference has become one of Northern Europe's most significant security and public diplomacy discussion forums, and a lot of high-level experts from Europe will arrive this year. The conference will feature tense discussions about the Transatlantic Free Trade agreement and NATO's activities following the summit in Wales, nevertheless, any conference can have unexpected topics, and war in Ukraine has changed the security situation in our continent irreversibly. Therefore, it is symbolic that before Latvia's presidency of the Council of the European Union, the conference's participants will outline the possible scenarios to seek answers on how to consolidate transatlantic values," Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity/Reform Party) believes.
