James Mirrlees is a leading expert on taxation, contract theory, moral hazard and information asymmetry. Mirrlees is considered as one of the pioneers of a new field of research related to access to information among participants in the process of making economic decisions. In 1996 the scientist together with William Vickrey won the Nobel Prize in Economics for their fundamental contributions to the economic theory of incentives and asymmetric information. Having made information asymmetry as the core of his research, James Mirrlees made ​​significant contribution to solving the problem of optimal taxation. The Nobel Prize laureate is the author of many books and articles on a wide range of problems of economic theory and history, including monetary theory, the theory of taxation and institutionalism. One of the most important contributions of scientist to economic science was very accurate solution of the problem of optimal customs tariffs. Over thirty years of experience and achievements in development of the economic science in 1998 Mirrlees was knighted by the Queen of Great Britain.

He is president of the Econometric Society (1982), President of the International Atlantic Economic Society (1988-89). Since 2002 James Mirlees is the Professor Emeritus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and heads Morningside College of this University, as well as is an honorary professor of political economy at Cambridge University.
