Regional event of World Latvian Economic and Innovation Forum to take place in Melbourne

he first regional event of the World Latvian Economic and Innovation Forum (WLEIF) outside Latvia is due to start in Melbourne, Australia, this Thursday, December 29, Kristine Saulite, chairperson of the Latvian Association of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian WLEIF coordinator, told LETA.

The regional WLEIF event, which will take place on December 29 and 30, is expected to bring together Latvian and Australian entrepreneurs, as well as professionals of Latvian descent also from several other countries. Like the previous forums that took place in Riga, the regional event aims to promote cooperation, which why its program features a session on contact and support institutions in Latvia, Singapore and Australia.


In Saulite’s words, the event might become a launch pad for future WLEIF events outside Latvia with the aim to promote the involvement of entrepreneurs and professionals of Latvian origin in the Latvian economy, promoting knowledge transfer, cooperation and contribution to Latvia.


“This event is taking for the first time, and as it is often the case with things that take place for the first time, it is also an experiment. In our view, the Asia-Pacific region has economic potential, and this will be our first attempt to bring entrepreneurs and professionals of various fields from Latvia and from this region closer together,” said Saulite.


Speakers at the event’s opening session include Culture Minister Dace Melbarde, politician and judge Egils Levits, as well as Atis Sjanitis, the Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large for the diaspora. Participants of the event will be able to learn about the success stories of such Latvian companies as Latvijas Finieris, Groglass, Primekss, Nordplay and others.


The regional WLEIF event takes place in liaison with the 56th Australian Latvian Cultural Festival and coincides with the beginning of the five-year long program of Latvia’s Centenary celebrations.
