The organizers of Expo Astana 2017 appreciated the interest of a high-level parliamentary delegation in their project, the Latvian parliament’s press service said.

"Latvia’s participation in Expo is an opportunity to step up economic cooperation between Latvia and Kazakhstan, emphasizing in particular Latvia’s offer for the transport and logistics industry. It will be a chance to advertise Liepaja, Ventspils and Riga as a transit and port cities linked by railway,” Latvian parliament’s vice speaker Inese Libina-Egnere (Unity) said during the meeting with the Kazakh representatives.

She said that the Latvian business people with the guidance of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry were actively planning participation in Expo Astana 2017.

The Latvian parliament’s secretary, Andrejs Klementjevs (Harmony), said that during the meeting with the Mayor of Astana, Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, in October 2015 he had already assured Dzhaksybekov that the Latvian parliament would back the country’s participation in Expo 2017.

The new Latvian government plans to review the previous government’s decision not to participate in World Expo 2017 in Kazakhstan, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) said in early May. The previous government headed by Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) had decided not to participate in Expo Astana 2017 due to the high costs.
