Latvian political parties lose state funding

BC, Riga, 03.09.2014.Print version
The Corruption Prevention Bureau of Latvia (CPB) has decided to halt state funding for the Greens and Farmers' Union in the amount of EUR 79,000 due to various financial violations, reports LETA, referring to LTV.

According to the CPB decision, the party will have to subsist on contributions until the end of the year.

The CPB told LETA that three other parties could also receive zero funding from the state – All for Latvia! – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, Unity, and Reform Party.

The CPB representative Inta Nolle said that after inspecting the parties' 2012 financial report, the bureau detected several violations in regard to illegal spending of state funding.

The bureau found out that Greens and Farmers' Union had used the state funding to cover legal aid services, as well as to transfer a specific amount of money from the state funds to the party's donations fund, which is against the law.

All for Latvia! – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, on the other hand, used the state funding to pay for various office, household, and food products, while Unity spent its funding to rent carpets for its office, and to cover the costs of its pre-election ads, as well as other services connected with catering. Meanwhile, Zatler's Reform Party used the state funding to pay for alcohol, catering services, and funeral flowers.
