The Security Police have discovered a possible case of corruption at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs that deals with illegal issuing of residence permits, informs LETA.

The Security Police informed LETA that on June 19, a criminal process was initiated on possible bribetaking, mediation in bribery, bribery and document forgery.

The investigation found that, by ignoring the established registration procedure and regulations stipulated by the government, several employees at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs helped an unnamed third-country citizen to extend the term of his/her residence permit. The organizer was a Latvian citizen who acted as an intermediary between the third-country citizen and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs employees, receiving a payment for his part in the scheme.

The person offered a bribe to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs employees, as well as forged documents necessary for extending the term of the residence permit.

The Security Police arrested the person on July 7. Two days later, he was charged with being a bribery intermediary and forging of official documents. The person has been released on his own recognizance, whereas two employees at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs currently have the status of a suspect in a criminal case.
