Detection of counterfeit euros more than doubled in Estonia in H1

232 counterfeit euro banknotes were discovered in the first half of the year 2014 in Estonia while in the first half of last year, 97 forged euro banknotes were discovered in Estonia, LETA/Postimees Online cites Eesti Pank statistics.

Compared to a year earlier, February led to the growth, as then 126 forgeries were discovered, while in other months, the number of forgeries was 10-30.

 

In Estonia, counterfeit 100- and 500-euro banknotes are discovered most often, 82 and 59 respectively in the first six months of the year. In particular, the number of counterfeit 500- euro banknotes has increased in Estonia.

 

In the euro area as a whole, 81% of the counterfeits are 20- and 50-euro banknotes.
