European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said during a meeting with Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) yesterday that he had a high opinion of Latvia's plans for absorption of the European Union funds during the next planning period, LETA learned from the European Commission Representation in Latvia.

Hahn praised the absorption of the EU funds in Latvia during the previous planning period, and said that the country's plans for the next planning period also looked promising.

Although agreement is to be reached yet on some matters, it is clear already now that the partnership agreement is in line with the investment principles of the revised cohesion policy, he said. The plan's objectives include support for entrepreneurship, research and innovation, development of low carbon emissions economy, and sustainable transport, all of which is meant to improve Latvia's competitiveness, foster economic growth and create new jobs, added Hahn.

Latvia's "Growth and Employment" program for the 2014-2020 was submitted to the European Commission last month.
