The Banker names Vilks Europe's best finance minister in 2012

The international financial affairs publication The Banker has named Latvian Finance Minister Andris Vilks Europe's best finance minister of 2012, praising his work on stabilizing the country's finances and promoting growth, Nozare.lv was informed by the Finance Ministry, writes LETA.

"It is a great honor to be recognized as Europe's best finance minister. This award reflects not only the work of the Finance Ministry, but also the efforts of other ministries and the government in overcoming the crisis. We all had a common goal. Our joint efforts, well-thought-out actions and belief in our efforts helped overcome hardships and foster economic growth," emphasizes Vilks.

 

Vilks points out that new challenges lie ahead of Latvia this year, including the introduction of the euro, and emphasizes the importance of joint effort.

 

The Banker points out that Latvia was among the countries most affected by the crisis. Therefore the country's work on facilitating growth deserves a high appraisal. Last year, Latvia was the fastest growing economy in the European Union. Even though the country's path to this achievement was not easy, the results attained have restored faith in the country's strength and provided opportunities for successful issue of government bonds on international financial markets.
