European Union (EU) funds are being highly successfully absorbed by Liepaja, and the city is among the most positive examples in Latvia in this regard, Finance Minister Andris Vilks (Unity) said in an interview on Rietumu Radio today.

"Liepaja has signed LVL 112.7 million worth of projects and a large part of this money has already been utilized. A 0.2% error rate indicates that the funds have been absorbed successfully without any reproaches," said the minister and added that, elsewhere in the EU, up to two% error rates are considered excellent results, writes LETA.

Commenting the city's priorities in the bloc's next planning period, Vilks pointed out that Liepaja has a clear vision. There is a good industrial, transport and logistics potential in Liepaja that should be developed. The city is in need of a new transport overpass and it is also necessary to consider dredging its port, explained the minister.

Vilks believes that Liepaja will become attractive for business development at local and international levels, as indicated by the city's geographical location and history. The minister also supports the Liepaja City Council's efforts in developing the resort industry.

As reported, today, Vilks is visiting Liepaja.
