In an interview with LETA, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said that Latvia must approach discussion on the European Union's multi-annual budget from 2014 to 2020 realistically, as discussions on the bloc's financial perspectives will be tough, but not without compromises.

The minister pointed out that Latvia's main priority in the discussion is to retain adequate Cohesion financing, as well as achieve fairer direct payments for farmers.

''Will we be successful in completely achieving what we desire? Let us be realistic. In a time of serious crisis, talks will be tough, but there will be compromises made. We see these two programs in the EU budget as equally important, and thus we will continue to actively defend our position,'' the minister said.

As reported, the EU's multi-annual budget will be discussed in detail during the bloc's summit at the end of the month in Brussels.
