At an emergency session of the government today, EUR 15,000 (LVL 10,542) was allocated for dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. The sum of money will be allocated from the budgetary fund for emergency situations. It will be transferred to the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the earthquake in Haiti was possible the worst humanitarian crisis in history. The situation is catastrophic, with 90% of the capital city destroyed, as well as the majority of the country's infrastructure, writes LETA.

According to several initial calculations, the number of victims could reach several tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. The horror of the situation was intensified by live people buried in the debris, as well as the worsening sanitary situation, says the foreign ministry.

As already reported, a Latvian Red Cross special fundraising campaign for the victims of the Haiti earthquake is not planned at the moment; however, it is possible to make a donation to the Red Cross account for these purposes.

As reported earlier, the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince was struck last week by a devastating 7.0 magnitude quake.
