The Management Board of Enterprise Estonia approved funding for the reconstruction of greenhouses at the Tallinn Botanic Garden. The old worn-out greenhouses will be demolished and new ones built instead, which will form a whole with the central palm house. The terrace bordered by the greenhouses will also be reconstructed, so that plants can be exhibited and a cafe opened in the summer.

“In the greenhouses of the botanic garden, which were established as early as the 1970s, exhibition opportunities have become rather poor, and this has decreased the number of visitors year by year. In addition, the old greenhouses endanger the preservation of rich and exotic plant collections, and there are great heat losses during heating, and poor working conditions for employees,” Monica Hankov, Director of the Business Environment Division of Enterprise Estonia, listing the reasons for the reconstruction. “The new greenhouses provide more opportunities for scientific work, and offer both local inhabitants and tourists something interesting outside the city centre and Old Town of Tallinn, thus increasing revenue from tourism,” she added.

Reconstruction is planned in two stages, the first of which will be implemented in 2008-2009. During this stage, the exhibition greenhouses located to the south of the palm house will be reconstructed. The second stage is planned for the years 2009-2011, and during this stage, the exhibition greenhouses to the north of the palm house will be reconstructed.

The works of the first stage were supported with MEEK 27 from the programme of Enterprise Estonia for increasing the competitiveness of regions, which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

As a result, 700 square metres of covered exhibition area and 300 square metres of growth area for collections will be completed.
