Latvia: EUR 1.9 mln worth of EU funds spent inappropriately in H1
Under EU law, impropriety is defined as an irregularity
committed as a result of an economic activity or omission which causes or is
likely to cause damage to the general budget of the EU by requiring the general
budget to cover an unjustified part of expenditure. Impropriety means, for
example, a request for reimbursement for work not actually performed or irregularities
in procurement.
In total, in this EU funding period, which lasts from 2014
to 2020, inappropriate expenditures in the amount of EUR 22.9 mln have been
identified. In this planning period, EUR 4.4 billion are available to Latvia
from EU funds.
In the first half of 2020, EUR 1.9 mln are considered to
have been spent inappropriately, of which suspicions of fraud or organized
crime were found in the amount of EUR 1.11 mln, but violations of procurement
norms were found in the amount of EUR 520,000.
