The government coalition agreed in principle today to provide support to the tourism, hospitality and culture sectors which have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told journalists following the weekly coalition meeting, referred LETA.

Karins said that the coalition increasingly turns its attention to economy-related issues, looking for measures to stimulate the economy.

"We agreed in principle on two things - there are industries that are most extensively affected - these are the hospitality industry and culture. They have been extensively impacted because people were prevented from gathering and travel was banned. We agreed in principle that these two sectors have to be additionally supported," the prime minister said.

Work on a support solution will take place until the middle of this week, he said.

On Wednesday, May 20, the Economics Ministry will present a tool for rescuing the tourism industry, said Economics Minister Janis Vitenbergs (KPV LV). The coalition partners have authorized the Economics Ministry to work out the plan.

There should be clarity by Wednesday whether the support to the tourism industry will be provided as vouchers or in some other format, the economics minister said.
