Number of payment cards issued by Latvian banks down 3.4% in nine months

The number of payment cards issued by Latvian banks declined by 3.4 % or 76,600 cards from the end of last year to 2.167 mln at the end of September 2018, according to the data provided by the Finance Latvia Association writes LETA.

Out of all payment cards, 1.753 mln were debit cards. Their number declined by 1% or 17,300 cards from the end of 2017. The number of credit cards decreased by 16% or 53,600 to 281,800 cards. The number of business cards dropped by 4.1% or 5,700 to 132,200.


At the end of September this year, the banks had issued 1.791 mln MasterCard cards, down 1% against the end of 2017. Visa followed with 375,300 cards, down 2.6%.


Swedbank had issued the highest number of bankcards at the end of September, or 1.007 mln, which was an 0.8 % rise against the end of last year. SEB Banka had issued 476,200 cards, up 0.1 %, and the number of bankcards issued by Citadele declined 9.4 % to 314,800. Luminor Bank (formerly DNB Banka) had issued 250,400 cards, down 2.6%.


At the end of September 2018, there were 985 ATMs in operation across Latvia, including 366 ATMs accepting cash deposits.


Swedbank had the largest ATM network of 369 machines, down from 388 at the end of last year.

The number of Latvian banks issuing payment cards was down to 16 from 17 at the end of last year.
