Issued in 1 million copies, the Lithuanian coins will be suitable for payment in Lithuania and other countries of the euro area, the Bank of Lithuania said.

"The first Lithuanian anniversary coin sends a message about our special language – it is believed to be the most archaic spoken Indo-European language. The coin features a Lithuanian word ACIU (the Lithuanian word for 'thank you'). It is one of the first words that is learned by children and foreigners learning the Lithuanian language, it is often used in daily conversations. The word is also a reflection of the Lithuanian language itself, it implies a beautiful link to money. Every payment for goods or services is a some sort of gratitude in a materialized form," said Vitas Vasiliauskas, the governor of the central bank.

After Lithuania adopted the European Union's (EU) currency, the euro, on Jan. 1 of 2015, the Bank of Lithuania may issue Lithuanian collectible and anniversary coins. Collectible coins for six topics and two anniversary coins were issued this year. In addition to the coin dedicated to the Lithuanian language, the Bank of Lithuania and the other 18 countries in the eurozone issued an anniversary 2 euro coin, celebrating 30 years of the EU flag.
