Bank of Latvia issues collector coin dedicated to Emils Darzins and "Valse Melancolique"

BC, Riga, 05.10.2015.Print version
The Bank of Latvia will issue a new EUR 5 silver collector coin "Valse Melancolique" on Tuesday, October 6, 2015.

This coin is a dedication to "Valse Melancolique", one of the most excellent pieces of the Latvian symphonic music produced by the likewise brilliant composer Emils Darzins, writes LETA.

The graphic design of the coin has been created by Ilmars Blumbergs, and Janis Strupulis is the author of the plaster model. The coin has been struck by "Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt" in the Netherlands.

The obverse of the coin depicts a radiant shooting star, half-encircled by seven concentric bands of an arc at the top, which symbolize a rainbow. The reverse of the coin features the inscription "Valse Melancolique", symbolizing a rainbow, at the top. According to the conception of Blumbergs, the shooting star represents Darzins' premature and tragic death, while the seven bands of the rainbow symbolize turning to God through music.

The collector coin "Valse Melancolique" is legal tender in the Republic of Latvia (yet hardly to be found in circulation, as collector coins in general are miniature works of art, highly admired and demanded by the numismatic community and other interested parties). Its maximum mintage is limited to 5,000 coins.
