FDI in Lithuania amounted to EUR 317.2mn in H1 2015

In the Q2 of 2015 foreign direct investment flow into Lithuania and the Lithuanian direct investment flow abroad were increasing, the Bank of Lithuania reports, writes LETA.

According to provisional data, in the Q2 of 2015, as in the Q1, the foreign direct investment (FDI) positive flow in Lithuania amounted to EUR 65.2 mln. and this indicates an increase in investment in Lithuania. This FDI increase was driven by non-residents' investment in debt and equity instruments - their flows amounted to EUR 154.3 mln. and EUR 43 mln. respectively. In the first half year of 2015 FDI in Lithuania amounted to EUR 317.2 mln. (1.8 % of GDP).


In the Q2 of 2015, in Lithuania the strongest increase was recorded in the FDI from Poland (EUR 254.1 mln.), Germany (EUR 75.8 mln.) and Spain (EUR 28.7 mln.), while the largest decrease was recorded in the FDI from Sweden (EUR -182.7 mln.), Estonia (EUR -66.9 mln.) and Switzerland (EUR -61.8 mln.).


Over the Q2, the largest investment was made in manufacturing (EUR 153.5 mln.), information and communication activities (EUR 12.3 mln.), while the largest decrease in investment was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (EUR -43.1 mln.).


As of 30 June 2015, cumulative FDI in Lithuania amounted to EUR 13.1 bln.. Over the first half of 2015 its amount in Lithuania increased by EUR 238.7 mln. (1.9 %). FDI per capita amounted to an average EUR 4,514 (on 31 December 2014 - EUR 4,404).


According to the data as of 30 June 2015, investors from the following countries have invested the most in Lithuania: Sweden - EUR 3.1 bln. (24 %), The Netherlands - EUR 1.5 bln. (11.6 %), Germany - EUR 1.2 bln. (9.3 %), Poland - EUR 905.5 mln. (6.9 %), Norway - EUR 850.8 mln. (6.5 %) and Finland - EUR 650.2 mln. (5 % of total FDI). Cumulative FDI in Lithuania from the EU member states amounted to EUR 10.9 bln. (83.5 %), from the euro area countries - EUR 5.7 bln. (43.7 %), from CIS countries - EUR 260.7 mln. (2 % of total FDI).


According to the data as of 30 June 2015, the largest investment was made in financial and insurance activity - 27.4 %, manufacturing - 21.5 %, real estate transaction activity - 12.7 %, wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 11.6 %, information and communication activity - 8.8 % of total FDI. In manufacturing, the largest investment was made in the manufacture of refined petroleum, chemical and pharmaceutical preparations - EUR 1.4 bln. (49.1 % of total FDI in manufacturing) and food products, beverages and tobacco - EUR 303 mln. (10.7 %).


In the first and Q2s 2015 Lithuania's direct investment (DI) flow abroad was positive (EUR 123.6 mln. and EUR 153.9 mln.), albeit in the Q4 of 2014 it dropped (a EUR 18.7 mln. decrease in Lithuania's DI abroad). The hike in the DI flow in the Q2 of 2015 was due to an increase in investment in debt instruments of EUR 127.9 mln.


In the Q2 of 2015 Lithuania's DI grew most rapidly in Latvia (EUR 31.9 mln.), Sweden (EUR 27.7 mln.), and Estonia (EUR 26.7 mln.), while by types of economic activity - wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (EUR 80 mln.), as well as professional, scientific and technical activity institutions (EUR 23.9 mln.). Lithuania's DI decreased most in Spain (EUR -9 mln.) and Denmark (EUR -2.7 mln.).


As of 30 June 2015, Lithuania's cumulative DI abroad amounted to EUR 2.2 bln.. Over the first half year of 2015, its amount abroad contracted by EUR 115.6 mln., or 5 %. Lithuania's cumulative DI in the EU Member States amounted to EUR 2 bln. (90.3 %), in euro area countries - EUR 1.6 bln. (70.8 %), in the CIS countries - EUR 196.4 mln. (8.9 % of Lithuania's total DI abroad).


According to the data as of 30 June 2015, the largest investment was made in Luxembourg - EUR 483.9 mln. (21.9 %), The Netherlands - EUR 460.8 mln. (20.8 %), Poland - EUR 311.8 mln. (14.1 %), Latvia - EUR 267.3 mln. (12.1 %), Cyprus - EUR 192.3 mln. (8.7 %) and Estonia - EUR 104.5 mln. (4.7 % of Lithuania's total DI abroad).


The largest investment abroad was made by Lithuanian enterprises in professional, scientific and technical activities - EUR 1 bln. (46.7 %), manufacturing - EUR 410.6 mln. (18.5 %), wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - EUR 265.5 mln. (12 %), real estate transaction activities - EUR 126.9 mln. (5.7 % of the total Lithuanian DI abroad).


As for manufacturing, the largest investment was made in the manufacture of refined petroleum, chemical and pharmaceutical preparations (86 % of Lithuania's total DI in manufacturing).
