BC, Vilnius, 25.11.2014.Print version
Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant has been renamed after former president Algirdas Brazauskas. The power plant was renamed by the decision of the Government seeking to commemorate the merit of the late Algirdas Brazauskas, the first president of the restored independent Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

The ceremony was attended by Social Democratic Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius who unveiled the memorial plaque to the late president Algirdas Brazauskas.

"Solid Brazauskas' contribution to the construction of Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant prompted to call it after the president. Brazauskas was proud of being a part of this exceptional project in Lithuania. People who at the time worked with him remember his concern about Lithuania's economy, energy and the development of construction. The hydroelectric power plant laid foundations for his further work for the benefit of Lithuania," said Prime Minister Butkevicius.

Brazauskas first joined Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant project as hydrotechnical engineer in 1956-1958 when he was still studying at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology). The power plant now managed by Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production) is one of the major power plants in Lithuania that uses renewable resources.
