Prosecutor brings charges against 6 persons in Daugavpils siltumtikli bribery affair
As LETA was informed by Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Aiga Eiduka, as the pre-trial investigation is currently ongoing, no further information will be released at this moment.
According to the Corruption Prevention Bureau, the case deals with a string of procurement tenders organized by Daugavpils City Council's heat supply company Daugavpils siltumtikli.
According to materials in the case, two of the persons charged in the case, covered by municipal officials, defrauded two Daugavpils municipal companies and three private companies of EUR 850,000 in total in 2011 and 2012.
In several instances, the victims were promised extra emission quotas, and in once case, a bribe was paid to a senior Daugavpils City Council official so one particular company be declared the winner of a procurement tender organized by Daugavpils siltumtikli.
According to materials in the case, two Daugavpils City Council officials, including one high-ranking official, are suspected of taking bribes, abuse of authority, and aiding and abetting fraud. Two businessmen are suspected of large-scale fraud, giving bribes, and supporting abuse of authority, another two businessmen are suspected of acting as go-betweens in the scheme, and one businessman of large-scale fraud and supporting abuse of authority.
The Corruption Prevention Bureau emphasizes that none of these persons may be deemed guilty until a court rules so.
As reported, three officials were detained in the case – then Daugavpils Vice Mayor Vjaceslavs Sirjakovs and businessmen Janis Sprinovskis and Gints Sorokins.
