Lithuania's deputy MFA calls for immediate completion of EU internal energy market

Lithuania's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Rolandas Krisciunas took part in the EU's General Affairs Council meeting, which continued a debate on a strategic agenda for the European Union and discussed one of its pillars – the creation of an Energy Union, reported BC the ministry.

"EU institutions and member states must take measures to immediately complete the European internal energy market. It is necessary to implement the Third Energy Package and to strive for further development of energy infrastructure. It is also necessary to ensure the synchronization of the electricity networks of member states with the Continental Europe network system, and eliminate energy islands more quickly," said Krisciunas.

 

The ministers also discussed the Commission's work programme for 2015. "The Commission's work programme should give considerable attention to greater investment, deepening the internal market, especially removing barriers to services in the EU. It is also important to ensure a co-ordinated EU response to new threats, such as the Ebola virus, cyber-attacks or propaganda by the third countries," said the Lithuanian deputy minister in identifying EU agenda priorities for the next year.

 

The meeting prepared the 18-19 December European Council, and examined its draft agenda. The European Council will discuss growth, jobs, European competitiveness, including the Commission's initiative to mobilise EUR 300 billion of investment over the period 2015-2017. External relations issues, measures fighting Ebola will also be addressed.

 

The Council also held a discussion on ensuring respect for the rule of law in member states.
