Next week liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Independence will arrive to Lithuania, it will ensure Lithuania's energy freedom, says Jovita Neliupsiene, Chief Advisor on Foreign Affairs to President Dalia Grybauskaite, cites LETA/ELTA.

Grybauskaite's advisor told the Ziniu Radijas radio that one of the most important things is that Lithuania rallied together for the project and went all the way to implement it.

According to the chief advisor, the LNG terminal project is valued on the European Union level. Based on a recently published European Commission energy security assessment the terminal in Klaipeda has been acknowledged as the main infrastructure object helping to achieve EU energy security.

"We indeed are the first in the region who found will to take care of ourselves and are ready to help others – the terminal can supply gas to Latvia and Estonia, and ensure Finland's energy security once Estonia-Finland connections are completed. In 4 years from an isolated country dependent 100% on one gas supplier we became an independent participant of the international gas market. () This means that we have an alternative and nobody will be able to pressure us and threaten to cut off gas ()," Neliupsiene said.
