Minister Masiulis: nothing to fear about LNG carrier Independence security

BC, Vilnius, 20.10.2014.Print version
Lithuanian Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis has said that the incident in the Swedish waters should not hamper Lithuania's Liquefied Natural Gas terminal project, reports LETA/ELTA.

According to the minister, Norway is currently responsible for the security of LNG carrier Independence which is already sailing in the Baltic Sea towards Lithuania.

"The ship's security is ensured. Norwegian owners of the vessel will be responsible for it until it sails to Klaipeda. Once it arrives we will take over. There is really nothing to fear," Masiulis told the news service of the national television LRT.

The Swedish navy has been looking for what is thought to be an out of order foreign, most likely Russian, submarine present in Swedish territorial waters.

According to security expert Aleksandras Matonis, Russia has time and again shown that it tends to overstep international rules. He added that Klaipeda Seaport and Lithuania's LNG terminal interests the neighbours not any less than Stockholm archipelago.
