Work on EstLink 2 brings higher electricity price

BC, Tallinn, 14.10.2014.Print version
The work of the Estonian-Finnish electricity connection EstLink 2 has been suspended due to the replacement work of circuit joints that have caused problems repeatedly; therefore, the price of electricity at the Estonian electricity bourse is higher than last week, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Ain Köster, Head of Communications in the network company Elering said that the work started yesterday.

To make sure the EstLink 2 interruption time would be minimized, four EstLink 2 cable line supplier and builder Nexans Norway brigades work on the object simultaneously. The work is organized in such a way that in case of a serious need, it is possible to interrupt the replacement work and give the connection to market use within 24 hours. The work lasts from October 12 to 21.

"Currently, everything progresses as planned," said Köster. "It is possible that work will be completed sooner, but right now won't start forecasting that."

Poor insulation of EstLink 2 cable's return circuit joints has caused two failures of the link in recent months. Nexans will replace all now 11 joints. EstLink 2 has been at the market’s disposal since the beginning of last December and was commissioned in February 2014.

Monday morning, the price of electricity in Nord Pool Spot Estonian area grew to more than 74 euros per megawatt hour, while in Finland the price of electricity is today 38-44 per MWh.
