Lithuania still uncertain over construction of NPP

BC, Vilnius, 09.10.2014.Print version
Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis has not given a concrete answer whether Lithuania needs a new nuclear power plant (NPP) in Visaginas. According to him Lithuania is finding its feet regarding energy security, thus there is no need to rush with the decision, informs LETA/ELTA.

"Considerable work has been completed on the project, there is a inter-party agreement that once the project is improve further steps may be taken. We are working on this," the minister told the Ziniu Radijas on Thursday.

"Now we find ourselves in a suitable crossroads – Lithuania is standing strong on its feet. With the Liquefied Natural Gas terminal we are at least sure that we will not be cut off from gas. We will have gas and, consequently, electrical energy. At the moment generating electricity using gas would be more expensive, therefore, we will import a substantial amount. However, at least we are prepared and the situation similar to the one in Ukraine cannot happen here. From now on we must act wise and see which way is the best for us, which is the least expensive," the minister said.

Masiulis acknowledged that the discussion over the nuclear power plant have prolonged. And yet he believes this is natural due to the sheer size of the project. "I would say it (the project – ELTA) has to be matured and then we will see its real benefit and how it should be developed," the minister said.
